Do Dry Transformers Require Air Circulation?

Dec 15, 2023

Dry-type transformers, also known as cast resin transformers, do not require air circulation for cooling purposes like oil-filled transformers. Dry transformers are designed to operate without the need for cooling oil or external cooling systems. Instead, they rely on the natural convection of air for cooling.

The windings of dry transformers are encapsulated in epoxy resin, which provides insulation and protection. This resin is a good conductor of heat, allowing heat generated during operation to dissipate into the surrounding air. The outer surface of the transformer usually has fins or cooling channels that increase the surface area for better heat dissipation.

While dry transformers do not require air circulation systems, it is important to ensure adequate space around the transformer for proper ventilation. The surrounding area should be free from obstructions that could impede the natural flow of air. Additionally, the operating temperature of the transformer should be monitored to avoid overheating.

Overall, while dry transformers don't rely on forced air circulation, providing appropriate ventilation and ensuring the transformer operates within its specified temperature limits is crucial for their proper functioning and longevity.
