What Is The Dual Purpose Of Oil Immersed Transformer?

Jul 18, 2024

The dual purpose of an oil-immersed transformer is to provide electrical insulation and efficient cooling.

Electrical Insulation

The oil in an oil-immersed transformer serves as a dielectric medium, providing insulation between the transformer's windings and other live parts. It helps prevent electrical breakdown and short circuits by isolating the high-voltage components from the grounded parts of the transformer.

Efficient Cooling

Oil is an excellent coolant due to its high specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity. It helps dissipate heat generated during the operation of the transformer. The windings and core of the transformer are immersed in the oil, allowing heat to transfer from these components to the oil. The oil then circulates within the transformer, carrying the heat away and allowing the transformer to operate within acceptable temperature limits.

By serving as both an electrical insulator and a cooling medium, the oil in an oil-immersed transformer plays a crucial role in maintaining the transformer's performance and reliability.
