What Makes Oil-Immersed Transformers the Standard for Outdoor Reliability

In the world of power distribution, there is no doubt that oil-immersed transformers are the workhorses of outdoor power distribution, as seen in coastal substations in Southeast Asia and desert installations in the Middle East as well as mountain utilities in the Americas. They have been the default options in utilities and industries where reliability in the exposed environment was needed through the use of their strong construction, excellent thermal performance, and long life span over one hundred years. Although other technologies have come up, designs that are oil immersed still remain at the forefront of outdoor reliability. With the legacy of our Eaton joint venture and a sophisticated production technology, Jiangsu Ryan Electric provides oil-filled transformers with the specifications needed to satisfy the outdoor use of its products in over 80 countries..

Superior Thermal Management in All Conditions

The basic merit of the oil-immersed transformers is that they use oil-cooled medium. Mineral oil/biodegradable ester fluids have a much better heat transfer than air and this effectively moves the heat out of the windings and core to the tank surface and radiators. Such thermal efficiency is important at outdoor locations where ambient conditions may be arctic cold, or desert hot.

The oil-immersed transformers in Ryan Electric are designed to have the best oil circulation paths which eliminate hot spots even when fully loaded. Our radiator models have as much natural convection cooling (ONAN) surface area as possible and have strategically located fans (ONAF) to supply extra capacity when it is hotest. To serve installations that are located in high altitude areas with lower cooling efficiency due to lower air density, our designs have derating factors proved by the laboratory tests. The oil itself is coolant and insulator, and it retains dielectric strength both at extremes of temperatures. This thermal control property makes sure that Ryan Electric transformers can have the rated output no matter whether they are in the blazing sun of the Sahara or the frozen snow of the Siberian steppes.

Complete Sealing Against Environmental Ingress

Existence outdoor requires total shelter against the elements. External factors (rain, snow, humidity and salt spray) and internal factors (contaminants that are introduced by the air) should never reach internal parts. This is done by oil immersed transformer by employing various sealing concepts which have been developed over decades of experience in the field.

The liquid-immersed units of Ryan Electric have a completely welded tank structure with gasketed covers that stay intact in terms of thermal cycling and seismic occurrences. The pressure relief systems and conservators of our tanks adjust to the increase and decrease in oil and reject water vapor moisture- the most common cause of insulation loss. In installations located by the ocean or other places where the industry pollutes the air, we provide stainless steel radiator fins and tanks coated with epoxy that is not easily corroded over time. Silica gel desiccant breathers are used to make sure that the air entering during thermal contraction is dry and clean. All seals and gaskets are chosen to be compatible with the particular insulating fluid, either mineral oil, natural or synthetic ester, which has a leak-free lifespan of decades. The environmental sealing which is confirmed through aggressive production testing guarantees that internal insulation systems do not get dirty in spite of external conditions.

Mechanical Robustness and Short-Circuit Withstand

Outdoor transformers are not only threatened by the weather. Mechanical stresses caused by impact of vehicles, seismic events, vandalism and system failures are capable of destroying smaller designs. With their rough construction, oil immerged transformers offer the mechanical strength needed by outdoor installations.

The power transformers at Ryan Electric include windings that resist severe electromagnetic forces of externally short circuiting. Winding geometry is supported by our clamping structures at forces that would act to deform traditional structures. Mechanical protection is also achieved by the tank itself, where heavy-gauge steel is used to construct the tank and internal reinforcement is used against deflection under faulty conditions. In applications where extra physical security is needed, we will provide tamper-resistant designs where the enclosures are locked and there are barriers to protect them. Pad-mounted residential and commercial distribution Pad-mounted systems have heavy-duty cabinets with hinge-like impact resistance that can withstand unintentional impact of utility personnel and yet provide secure and locked access. This mechanical integrity plus our complete ability to test short circuits means that Ryan Electric transformers outlast the failures and the effects which are bound to take place over decades of field use.

Field-Proven Longevity and Serviceability

The reliability of oil-immersed transformers can be illustrated by their service life, perhaps the best evidence of all. Other technologies can need to be replaced after 20-25 years, but when properly maintained, oil-immersed units can literally be used throughout 40 years or more. This durability is due not only to the natural strength of the construction but also to the possibility to sustain, control and even to renovate models in the field.

The transformers of Ryan Electric are constructed to be serviceable on the ground level. Sampling valves enable regular analysis of the oil to detect dielectric strength, moisture content, and dissolved gas levels - giving early warning of issues that are developing before they can become a problem in regard to reliability. The pressure/vacuum gauges and temperature indicators allow operators to check that everything is running correctly within one glance. In case of need of maintenance, the oil can be filtered, reclaimed, or replaced without interfering with the core and coil assembly. On critical applications, we incorporate the use of smart monitoring systems, which provide real-time information about the health of the transformers, and allows predictive maintenance, which further extends the life. This field serviceability and robust construction plus our certifications to IEEE, IEC and other world standards will provide Ryan Electric oil-immersed transformers with the outdoor reliability that generations of utility and industrial buyers have been relying on since the earliest transformer manufacturers started production- tested and proven in more than 50 countries and with our clients that include Microsoft data centres and national grid operators across the globe.
