What Are The Two Main Types Of Three Phase Transformers?

May 30, 2024

The two main types of three-phase transformers are:

Delta-Delta Transformer

In this configuration, both the primary and secondary windings of the transformer are connected in a delta (Δ) configuration. Each winding forms a closed loop, and the three windings are connected in a triangular shape. Delta-delta transformers are commonly used in industrial applications where the load is balanced and the neutral connection is not required.

Wye-Delta Transformer

This type of transformer has the primary winding connected in a wye (Y) configuration and the secondary winding connected in a delta (Δ) configuration. The primary winding has a neutral connection, while the secondary winding does not. Wye-delta transformers are often used in situations where there is an unbalanced load or when a neutral connection is required for the distribution of single-phase loads.

It's worth mentioning that there are other configurations and combinations possible in three-phase transformers, such as delta-wye, wye-wye, and autotransformers, which have specific applications based on the voltage and current requirements of the system.
