How to Specify a BESS Transformer: Voltage, Cooling, and Protection Essentials for Utility-Scale Storage
We watched a 100 MW / 200 MWh storage project in Texas lose six weeks of commissioning time last year. The cause was not the battery racks or the PCS. It was the transformer. The integrator had specified a standard distribution unit designed for one-way power flow and a steady load - and utility-scale battery storage does neither. Once the system started cycling, voltage regulation drifted outside the utility's ±5% band, and protection settings had to be re-engineered on site. That delay is why we keep telling EPCs the same thing: the BESS transformer is not an accessory. It is a schedule-critical component.
Why Energy Storage Needs a Purpose-Built Transformer
A storage plant charges and discharges on a daily cycle, often several times. Every transition reverses the power flow through the transformer, which flips the sign of the voltage drop across its impedance. A unit specified with fixed tap settings and one-directional thinking will show voltage swings that trip the plant controller or violate the interconnection agreement.
There are three operating conditions that separate a transformer for BESS project duty from a conventional distribution unit:
Bidirectional loading at power factors from 0.9 lagging to 0.9 leading
Rapid power response - output can jump from zero to rated in under one second
Harmonic currents from the PCS, which raise winding and core losses beyond nameplate expectations
Each one changes a design decision: tap range, impedance, cooling, and harmonic derating. Skip any of them and the transformer becomes the weak link in the system.
Voltage and Winding Configuration: What Goes on the Datasheet
Voltage classes and tap range
Most North American storage sites interconnect at 12.47 kV or 34.5 kV on the medium-voltage side, with the low-voltage winding matched to the PCS output, commonly 480 V or 600 V class. The spec sheet should state the tap range explicitly - we usually recommend a minimum of ±2 × 2.5% de-energized taps, and load tap changers (OLTC) when the grid voltage profile is unstable.
Two-winding or three-winding?
A two-winding BESS transformer connects one group of PCS units. A three-winding design carries two independent low-voltage windings, so two PCS groups share one transformer and one grid connection point - a common layout in 100 MW-class plants where footprint and substation cost matter. Specify the percent impedance (%Z) carefully: higher %Z limits fault current and simplifies breaker ratings, but it also increases voltage drop under charging load, so the protection coordination study and the transformer spec must be written together.
Cooling, Overload, and Enclosure Ratings
Cooling and overload duty
Storage transformers are designed for duty cycles, not steady loads. A typical spec calls for 110% continuous overload and 125% for two hours, with ONAN/ONAF cooling covering the transition. In hot markets like Texas or the Gulf states, add the ambient temperature - 50 °C design ambient changes the nameplate ratings and the cooling design materially.
Enclosure and environmental protection
For outdoor sites, NEMA 3R is the floor for a pad-mounted or skid unit. Coastal projects should ask for IP54 or better, plus a paint system rated for salt spray. Do not forget solar radiation: an enclosure that performs in Maine may overheat in Arizona unless the design accounts for sun load on the tank surface.
Certification and Compliance Checklist for North America
North America is not one standard, and the checklist differs by design type:
Dry-type designs: UL 1561 listing, plus IEEE C57.12.01 testing
Oil-immersed pad-mounted designs: IEEE C57.12.20 / C57.12.21 construction and CSA C22.2 No. 47 for Canada
System level: NFPA 855 sets separation and fire protection requirements for the storage system, which affects where the transformer can sit relative to battery racks
Ask the supplier to state certification numbers on the quotation, not just "UL available." A UL listed transformer supplier can show you the file number and the scope of the listing before you place the order. For a BESS transformer, we also recommend confirming the factory test plan includes temperature rise and lightning impulse tests, not only routine loss measurement.

There is no universal winner. A skid-mounted transformer for energy storage gives you flexibility and serviceability; a containerized design compresses schedule and footprint. We build both, and we usually recommend the skid route for projects with phased expansion, because you can add units without re-engineering the existing substation.
