7 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Power Transformer from China
The Price Gap Isn't the Real Problem
Last month, a contractor in Texas sent me two quotes for a 500 kVA pad-mounted transformer. One was $18,500. The other: $11,200. "Same specs," he wrote. "Why the 40% gap?"
I told him the gap isn't the problem. The problem is that neither quote came with answers to the seven questions that actually determine whether a transformer makes it through customs, passes site inspection, and stays running for 20 years.
That conversation happens at least twice a week in our sales inbox. Most buyers evaluating a transformer supplier from China focus on price first. It's understandable - the spread between manufacturers can feel like a red flag, and procurement teams have budgets to defend. But here's what the smartest buyers we work with learned early: asking the right questions before you compare prices saves more money than any discount ever will. Here's the real difference: one supplier may quote a unit at $11,200 but cut corners on core steel grade - adding $35,000 in extra no-load losses over the transformer's life. Suddenly the "cheaper" option is the expensive one.
Here are the seven questions you should ask before buying a power transformer from China - and what the answers actually mean.
Certifications: UL, CSA, and the "Built to Standard" Trap
Q1: Do you hold current UL and/or CSA certification for the specific product line I'm ordering?
Not "UL compliant." Not "designed to UL standards." Actual UL listing - with a file number you can look up on UL Product iQ right now, during the call.
This distinction trips up first-time buyers in North America more than any other. A manufacturer can claim they "follow UL standards" and technically be telling the truth - they're following the text of the standard during design. But a UL listed transformer carries a UL file number, which means UL Solutions physically walked the factory floor, tested production samples, and now conducts quarterly unannounced follow-up inspections. That's the gap between "we read the standard" and "an independent body verified our compliance four times a year."
The same goes for CSA in Canada. If your project is in Ontario or Alberta, the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) checks for the CSA mark before approving energization. No CSA mark, no power - regardless of how well the transformer performs on paper. I've watched a project in Vancouver get delayed three weeks because the AHJ rejected a transformer labeled "CSA compliant" without the actual certification number.
Q2: Can you send me a complete type-test report from an accredited third-party lab for this exact design?
Not a design calculation spreadsheet. Not a factory routine test certificate from 2019. A recent, full type-test report covering temperature rise, lightning impulse, short-circuit withstand, and partial discharge - conducted by a lab like DEKRA, KEMA, or a CNAS-accredited facility.
One detail most buyers miss: the test report must match the exact kVA rating, voltage ratio, and cooling class you're ordering. A 1000 kVA type-test report proves nothing about a 2500 kVA design. The thermal dynamics change, the short-circuit forces scale differently, and the winding configuration may not even be the same. Ask for the test report for your specific design family - and if they hesitate, that's your answer.
Reference Projects and the Factory That Tells the Truth
Q3: Who have you supplied in my market, and can you share a verifiable reference?
Ask for project details, not marketing stories: what was supplied, where it's installed, and something about the end-user that's checkable. "A data center in Malaysia" is useful. "Several projects across Southeast Asia" is not.
The strongest signal any transformer supplier China can send: "Here's the contact at the EPC firm we worked with. They said they'd take a reference call." In 18 years, I've seen maybe one in twenty suppliers make that offer. Those are the ones worth your time.
Q4: Can I visit the factory, or at minimum get a live video walkthrough?
Not a polished corporate video from 2022. A live video call - phone camera, real-time, unscripted - where you ask to see the winding workshop, the testing bay, and the current work-in-progress on the floor.
Here's a quick checklist for that walkthrough:
• Are nameplates being applied with visible certification marks?
• Is the testing area clean, organized, and actively in use - or does it look like museum furniture?
• Are there transformers in production that physically match the specs you're ordering?
• Do the workers on the winding line look like they know what they're doing, or are they glancing at the camera?
The factory floor never lies. A well-run power transformer quality inspection process is visible the moment you see the production line - organized stations, clear work instructions posted, calibrated instruments with visible calibration stickers, and test bays with transformers actually undergoing temperature rise tests.
Materials and Timeline: The Two Numbers That Determine Total Cost
Q5: Where do you source your core steel and copper winding wire?
The answer you want: "We use grain-oriented electrical silicon steel from Baosteel or Nippon Steel, electrolytic copper from certified mills, and we provide mill certificates with every order."
What you definitely don't want: "We use high-quality materials" - period, no specifics, no certificates, no supplier names.
Core steel quality directly dictates no-load losses. A cheap core with weak grain orientation and loose lamination can easily add 300–500 watts of extra no-load loss for a 1000 kVA unit. Over 25 years at $0.12/kWh, that's roughly $31,500 to $52,500 in wasted electricity - far more than any initial price difference between a quality core and a commodity-grade sheet.
I show every new engineer in our factory the same demonstration: two core steel samples, one premium-grade from Nippon Steel with tight, uniform lamination and visible domain refinement, the other a generic sheet with visible gaps and inconsistent grain alignment. The difference isn't subtle. And it shows up on the first no-load loss test.
Q6: What's your actual lead time - design, production, testing, and ocean freight included?
Factory-only production time is a misleading number. Total lead time - design approval drawings → material procurement → production → witness testing → container booking → ocean transit → customs clearance - is the number your project schedule actually depends on.

If a supplier can't give you a phase-by-phase breakdown and just offers "about 3 months," they're guessing. Your construction timeline pays for that guesswork - not them.
The Question That Exposes Everything: Warranty
Q7: What is your warranty process, and do you have local service support in my market?
A 2-year warranty on paper is standard across the industry. What actually matters: how the warranty works when your transformer is installed 8,000 miles from the factory.
Three sub-questions cut through the sales talk:
1. Spare parts availability: Do you stock critical components - HV/LV bushings, tap changers, gaskets, temperature controllers - that can ship within 48 hours? Or do you manufacture spares on demand, adding 4–6 weeks to any repair?
2. Local service support: Do you have a service partner in the US, Canada, or the Middle East who can mobilize for commissioning, troubleshooting, or warranty inspection? A manufacturer with zero local presence means every service event starts with booking an international flight - and that cost usually lands on you.
3. Winding failure process: What happens if a winding actually fails under warranty? Is the process "ship back to China at your expense for factory repair" or "field repair with remote factory engineering support and free replacement parts shipped immediately"?
Question #7 often tells you more about a supplier than questions #1 through #6 combined. It reveals whether they view you as a purchase order or a relationship. When you're running a data center, mining operation, or substation that can't afford downtime, that distinction is worth its weight in copper.

These aren't difficult questions to answer - for a qualified manufacturer. The suppliers who deflect, generalize, or promise "no problem" without specifics are telling you something useful: they don't have the answers. Better to discover that before the purchase order than after the transformer arrives.
